Vascular Surgery is a specialty of surgery in which diseases of the vascular system, or arteries and veins, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures and surgical reconstruction.

Eligibility Requirements

RACS Generic Eligibility Requirements:

  • Medical registration
    • In Australia: General (unconditional) registration, or
    • In Aotearoa New Zealand: General scope or restricted general scope registration in the relevant specialty
  • Permanent residency or citizenship of Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand
  • You must have completed either the Operating with Respect eModule (retired late 2023) or Introduction to Operating with Respect. Both online courses are provided by the RACS Professional Development team. Note: Only one of these courses needs to be completed to meet this eligibility requirement.
  • Generic Surgical Sciences Exam (GSSE) must be passed either at the time of registration or by the close of SET applications.

Vascular Surgery Requirements

  • Successful completion of RACS Generic Surgical Sciences Examination (GSSE)
  • Successful completion of the Clinical Examination
  • 8 weeks full time surgical rotation in General Surgery undertaken within the 7 years
    immediately prior to, and completed by, closing date of application.
  • 16 weeks full time surgical rotation in Vascular surgery undertaken within the 7 years
    immediately prior to, and completed by, closing date of application.

Selection:

The selection process will use the following selection tools, each contributing a weighted score as:

  • Structured Curriculum Vitae 25%
  • Written Referee Reports 25%
  • Verbal Referee Reports 10%
  • Semi-Structured Interview 40%

Interviews

Interviews will be offered on a ratio of three (3) applicants to one (1) available accredited SET 1 post. Applicants will be invited to interview based on ranked order of the combined CV and referee report score.

The SET Program in Vascular Surgery is structured over a five year sequential curriculum of speciality Vascular Surgery training in posts accredited by the Board of Vascular Surgery of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Trainees are expected to undertake the following as part of the SET Program in Vascular Surgery:

  • Successfully complete the EMST Course by the end of SET2.
  • Complete the ASSET Course by the end of SET1.
  • Successfully complete the CCrISP Course by the end of SET2.
  • Submit In Training Assessment Forms, Mini-CEX, DOPS, and logbooks on the following dates each year
  • Satisfactorily complete the Board of Vascular Surgery Research Requirement
  • Satisfactorily complete the Clinical Examination, the Surgical Science Examination in Vascular Surgery and the Fellowship Examination in Vascular Surgery in accordance with RACS policies
  • Attend the annual Trainee Skills Course. Satisfactorily attend and participate in trainee tutorials
  • Complete at least one hundred (100) hours of ultrasound scanning which must cover a wide variety of ultrasound examinations prior to being approved to sit the Fellowship Examination in Vascular Surgery.
