Urologists are surgeons who treat men, women and children with problems involving the kidney, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. These conditions include cancer, stones, infection, incontinence, sexual dysfunction and pelvic floor problems.

Eligibility Requirements

RACS Generic Eligibility Requirements:

  • Medical registration
    • In Australia: General (unconditional) registration, or
    • In Aotearoa New Zealand: General scope or restricted general scope registration in the relevant specialty
  • Permanent residency or citizenship of Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand
  • You must have completed either the Operating with Respect eModule (retired late 2023) or Introduction to Operating with Respect. Both online courses are provided by the RACS Professional Development team. Note: Only one of these courses needs to be completed to meet this eligibility requirement.
  • Generic Surgical Sciences Exam (GSSE) must be passed either at the time of registration or by the close of SET applications.

Urology Specific Requirements

Examinations:

  • Passed the GSSE Examination
  • Passed the Clinical Examination (CE)

Clinical Rotations:

  • Complete a minimum 26 weeks in Surgery in
    General at PGY2 or above by the application
    closing date; and
  • Complete a minimum of 10 weeks in Emergency
    Department (ED) at PGY1 or above by the
    application closing date; and
  • Complete a minimum 26 weeks in Urology at
    PGY2 or above by the application closing date.

Selection:

The selection process uses three selection tools, each contributing the following weightings to the
Overall Selection Score of 100.

  • Structured Curriculum Vitae (25%)
  • Structured Referee Reports (30%)
  • Semi-Structured Interview (45%)

The Structured Curriculum Vitae has a maximum of 53 points. The components scored are:
a) Qualifications – Maximum 10 points
b) Professional Development Activities (Medical/Technical) – Maximum 8 points
c) Professional Development Activities (Non-Technical) – Maximum 5 points
d) Publications and Ongoing Research – Maximum 10 points
e) Presentations – Maximum 10 points
f) Rural/Regional Original and Experience – Maximum 10 points

The Urology SET Program is a five-year training program:

SET1: Basic Urology Training
SET2: Intermediate Urology Training
SET3: Intermediate Urology Training
SET4: Advanced Urology Training
SET5: Advanced Urology Training – progressing to independent clinical practice

The Curriculum encompasses the core knowledge, skills and attributes of a graduating urologist, and is divided into the three Sections: (1) Foundation Knowledge and Skills, (2) Clinical Urology, and (3) Fundamentals of Urologic Care.

Assessments

Quarterly assessment documentation is required for progression through the Urology SET program.
