Urologists are surgeons who treat men, women and children with problems involving the kidney, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. These conditions include cancer, stones, infection, incontinence, sexual dysfunction and pelvic floor problems.

Eligibility Requirements

Any person wishing to apply for the Surgical Education and Training Program in Urology must satisfy the generic eligibility criteria determined by the RACS. All generic eligibility requirements must be satisfied at the time of registration when applicants must also consent to a full criminal history check including the submission of relevant documentation if required.

Applicants must complete the following clinical rotations:

  • Surgery in General – PGY2 or above – 26 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine – PGY1 or above – 10 weeks
  • Urology – PGY2 or above – 26 weeks

Successful completion of the RACS Clinical Examination (CE) will be a mandatory eligibility requirement for the 2024 intake (to be conducted during 2023). The number of attempts made at the RACS Clinical Examination may also be taken into consideration in the awarding of CV points.

Application Process

The selection process uses three selection tools, each contributing the following weightings to the
Overall Selection Score of 100.

  • Structured Curriculum Vitae (30%)
  • Structured Referee Reports (30%)
  • Semi-Structured Interview (40%)

The Structured Curriculum Vitae has a maximum of 110 points. The components scored are:
a) Qualifications (Max 15 points)
b) Professional Development Activities (Medical/Technical) (Max 20 points)
c) Professional Development Activities (Non-Technical) (Max 15 points)
d) Publications and Ongoing Research (Max 25 points)
e) Presentations (Max 20 points)
f) Prizes, Awards and Leadership (Max 15 points)

The Urology SET Program is a five-year training program:

SET1: Basic Urology Training
SET2: Intermediate Urology Training
SET3: Intermediate Urology Training
SET4: Advanced Urology Training
SET5: Advanced Urology Training – progressing to independent clinical practice

The Curriculum encompasses the core knowledge, skills and attributes of a graduating urologist, and is divided into the three Sections: (1) Foundation Knowledge and Skills, (2) Clinical Urology, and (3) Fundamentals of Urologic Care.

Assessments

Quarterly assessment documentation is required for progression through the Urology SET program.
