Clinical Radiology

A radiologist is a medical professional who specialises in using medical imaging technologies to diagnose and treat injury and disease. Diagnostic radiologists use medical imaging techniques to diagnose a disease or condition. Interventional radiologists use medical imaging techniques to diagnose and treat disease.

Eligibility Requirements

Have appropriate basic medical qualifications:

  • Be a graduate of a medical school recognised by the Medical Board of Australia and the Board of the RANZCR (or have successfully completed both Part I and Part II AMC examinations for overseas medical graduates in Australia)
  • Be fully registered as a medical practitioner by the registering authority recognised by the Board of the RANZCR, in the state or country in which the RANZCR training program is conducted
  • Have completed at least two full years in an approved hospital as an intern/resident

Application Process

1. Application through PMCV Match (preference health services) +/- Direct to Hospital
2. 3 Referees Required
3. Complete Health Service Interview
4. If selected, then apply to RANZCR

The Clinical Radiology Training Program is designed as a five-year training program and structured in three major phases.

Phase 1: Minimum 12 months

Phase 2: Minimum 36 months

Phase 3: 12 months

Trainees will continue in each phase until they have achieved the expected standard of competence and completed the training requirements of that phase. The length of each phase is determined by each trainee’s progress.

Competencies in each phase include:

  • Research Project Milestones
  • Exams
    • Phase 1: Applied Imaging Technology + Anatomy
    • Phase 2: Pathology + MCA + Case Reporting + OSCER
  • Work Based Assessments (WBAs) eg. US, Fluoroscopic procedures
  • Structured Learning Experiences
  • Regular Director of Training Feedback

Graduate to Workforce or Complete Fellowships

  • Body Imaging (Chest and/or Abdominal) Fellowship
  • Breast Imaging Fellowship
  • Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship
  • Neuroimaging Fellowship
  • MRI Fellowship
  • Interventional Fellowship
  • NeuroInterventional Fellowship (2 years)
