Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine

An Intensive Care Specialist is a medical doctor involved in the clinical assessment and management of patients who are critically ill. Often these patients have multiorgan failure and are at serious of risk of deterioration and fatal conditions and are requiring a high level of monitoring and medical intervention.
Minimum Time to Completion: 8 years from graduation

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective trainees must have:

  • A current medical registration
  • Successfully completed a 12 month internship
  • Have obtained FULL GENERAL registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Obtained documentary evidence of medical registration in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand that can be submitted with your application
  • Successfully completed 6 months intensive care supervised experience in a CICM accredited unit, within the past 3 years
  • The contact details of three referees: Two CICM Fellows who directly supervised you during 6 months of intensive care experience and; One senior ICU Nurse who worked with you during 6 months of intensive care experience

Application Process

The selection criteria consists of:

  • 3 structured referee reports: Two CICM Fellows who directly supervised you during 6 months of intensive care experience and; One senior ICU Nurse who worked with you during 6 months of intensive care experience
  • Structured CV
  • Situational Judgement Test (SJT) – NEW from 2022

    Letters of Service: PGY1 (Internship Year) to Date

    Additional Qualifications (eg Bachelors’ degrees, other Fellowships, post-grad Diplomas)
    Evidence of success at previous examinations
    Evidence of research experience / achievements
    Evidence of rural schooling

Trainees undergo 42 months of training time comprising:

  • 6 months of Foundation Training (prior to applying to the college)
  • 24 months of Core Training (18 months of which must be undertaken in paediatric intensive care)
  • 12 months during Transition Year

Required Training time for individual specialties include:

  • Anaesthetics 12 months
  • Paediatric Medicine 12 months (including 6 months emergency/acute medicine)
  • Elective 6 months
  • Rural Exposure 6 months

Second Part examination: AUD $4,200
