Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral maxillofacial surgeons specialise in the oral and maxillofacial regions of the neck and head. They diagnose and treat facial pain, wisdom teeth problems and misaligned jaws. They also perform reconstructive and dental implant surgery to treat facial trauma, facial tumors and craniofacial developmental abnormalities.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for eligibility for OMS training, applicants must have completed the following pre-requisites prior to commencement of accredited training:

  1. Dental degree with full and unconditional registration to practice dentistry in either Australia or New Zealand
  2. Medical degree with full and unconditional registration to practice medicine in either Australia or New Zealand
  3. Twelve (12) Months of PGY2+ rotations related to surgery or acute care which may include general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology head and neck surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology surgery, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology surgery, oral maxillofacial surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, anaesthesia, emergency or intensive care. (Applicants who have undertaken nine (9) months related to the acute care or surgical disciplines outlined above will be considered if they have completed 12 months of PGY 2+ rotations).
  4. The maximum duration of an OMS rotation during the PGY 2+ year must not exceed 6 months.
  5. Citizenship or permanent resident status of Australia or New Zealand

Methodology

The selection process is predetermined, transparent, and objective. It includes a range of approaches to ensure validity and reliability, involves multiple raters, contains criteria for marking and allocates weighting for each tool to permit ranking of the applicants. The tools include a structured curriculum vitae assessment (20%), professional performance appraisal (PPA) referee reports (35%), and panel interview (45%).

Applicants progress to the interview stage if they meet the benchmark of 25% for the combined CV and PPA scores. Furthermore, applicants who identify as  Māori, Pasifika, Aboriginal, or Torres Strait Islander and meet eligibility requirements automatically proceed to the interview stage.

Applicants submit completed application form (FOMS01), structured CV and certified supporting documents.

Stage 2: Collection of referee reports
Professional Performance Appraisals (PPAs) are distributed to referees, collated and scored.

Stage 3: Structured panel interviews
Successful applicants are notified two weeks in advance to attend the face-to-face structured interviews.

Stage 4: Announcement of offers

 

To satisfactorily complete the OMS training program, a trainee must successfully complete the following
requirements:

  • A minimum of four years of full-time training in accredited training posts
  • Maintenance of a learning portfolio
  • An annual logbook summary report at the end of OMS 1, 2 and 3
  • A final overall logbook summary report at the end of OMS 4.
  • Satisfactory six-monthly assessment reports
  • Completion of research requirements
  • Completion of Work-based Assessments
  • The following prescribed skills training courses, (or equivalent) by 31 October in OMS 2
  • Australian and New Zealand Surgical Skills Education and Training (ASSET)
  • Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST)
  • Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrlSP)
    Examinations 
  •  Surgical Scince and Training (SST) or the Foundation Examination.
  • Fellowship Examination, during the last 18 months of training (OMS 3/OMS 4). A pass in this examination is mandatory for completion of the training program and award of Fellowship.
