Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral maxillofacial surgeons specialise in the oral and maxillofacial regions of the neck and head. They diagnose and treat wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws. They also treat accident victims for facial injuries, carry out reconstructive and dental implant surgery, treat tumors, and, developmental craniofacial abnormalities of the jaws or facial regions.
Minimum Time to Completion: 7 years from graduation - inclusive of both dental and medical, typically requires 11 years of training.

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective trainees must:

  • Hold a Dental degree with full registration to practice dentistry in either Australia or New Zealand.
  • Hold a Medical degree with full registration to practice medicine in either Australia or New Zealand
  • Have completed a full year of surgery in general with minimum of 9 months in related surgical disciplines (e.g., otolaryngology head and neck surgery, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery).
  • Hold citizenship or permanent resident status of Australia or New Zealand.

Application Process

1. Application for eligibility for selection
– Application form provided by RACDS.
– Includes evidence of dental and medical degree, CV and 4 nominated referees.

2. Collection of referee reports
– PPA reports will be sought from at least 8 consultants who have been named by the applicant
as previous supervisors. 4 consultants will be nominated by the applicant and 4 will be selected
by the Selection Committee from the list provided of all previous posts and Consultants.

3. Structured panel interviews
– Interview format will change depending on Zoom or face-to-face. In general, applicants will partake in an interview with a panel.

Trainees must successfully complete a minimum of four years full time in accredited posts – trainees are not appointed for the entire training period; they occupy accredited posts on a yearly basis. It is the responsibility of the trainee to secure suitable training posts.

  • Training time completed in an accredited post is credited in periods of six (6) or 12 months only. The six (6) month training rotations must be undertaken continuously in the same position.
  • Trainees are required to keep logbooks of clinical training. An Annual Logbook Summary must be completed, included in the trainee’s learning portfolio and submitted to the College.
  • Six-Monthly Assessment reports are to be completed by the end of July and January and submitted to the College by 15 August and 15 February respectively.
  • If a Six-Monthly Assessment is reported by the Director of Training as unsatisfactory, this training period will not count towards the four years of surgical training.
  • There are 2 assessments in the program:
    1. Surgical Science and Training (SST) Examination – OMS 1 trainees must pass the SST Examination to progress to OMS 2 training.
    2. Final Examination – OMS 4 trainees must pass the Final Examination to apply for the award of Fellowship.
