Neurology

A neurologist’s area of expertise encompasses the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems as well as muscle. A neurologist is a skilled diagnostician who reaches an accurate diagnosis by taking a detailed history, performing a thorough neurological examination, and then investigating patients rationally by using tools, such as imaging, lumbar puncture (LP), neurophysiology and/or neuropsychology.

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective trainees must have:

completed the RACP Basic Training, including Written and Clinical Examinations
a current medical registration
been appointed to an appropriate Advanced Training position

New and current trainees need to apply for Advanced Training each year.

Application Process

Applicants must first apply for and be accepted for an Advanced Training Position.

Program Structure

Trainees undergo 36 months of certified core training time comprising:

24 months minimum of core training, including 6 months of clinical epilepsy and Electroencephalography (EEG) training (Paediatrics & Child Health trainees only)
12 months maximum of non-core training

After 36 months of certified training time, you will have completed:

24 months minimum of core training, including 6 months of clinical epilepsy and Electroencephalogy (EEG) training (Paediatrics & Child Health trainees only)
12 months maximum of non-core training
Advanced Training Research Project (trainees who commenced from 2017 onwards)
Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori Cultural Competence and Cultural Safety online course (trainees who commenced 2023 onwards)
Course attendance requirements
Developmental and Psychosocial Training (Paediatrics & Child Health trainees only)
Neurophysiology requirements
Residency In-Service Training Examination (optional)
