Nephrology

A nephrologist has expertise in diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, and treats the medical problems related to these diseases. Nephrology is a specialty with a significant component of general medicine, basic science and clinical research, teaching, as well as clinical areas of transplantation, hypertension, obstetric medicine and more recently an opportunity for procedural work.
Minimum Time to Completion: 7 years from graduation

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective trainees must have:

  • completed RACP Basic Training, including Written and Clinical Examinations
  • a current medical registration
  • been appointed to an appropriate Advanced Training position

Application Process

Applicants must first apply for and be accepted for an Advanced Training Position.

Trainees undergo 36 months of certified core training time.

They will also complete:

  • Developmental and Psychosocial Training (Paediatrics & Child Health trainees only)
  • 1 x Logbook of procedures performed (recommended)
  • 1 x Advanced Training Research Project + 1 x Nephrology Research Project
  • Course attendance

Teaching and learning

  • 2 x Learning Needs Analysis per training year
  • 1 x Professional Qualities Reflection per training year (recommended)

Assessments

  • 4 x Case-based Discussions per training year
  • 1 x Supervisor’s Reports per rotation (2 per 12-month rotation — full-time and part-time trainees)
Annual Fee:

AUD $3,690.00 (reduced fee of 50% for trainees in research)

Exam Fee:

Written examinations: AUD $2,031.00
Basic Training Clinical Examination: AUD $3,039.00
Faculty Clinical Examinations: AUD $3,039.00

Admission to Fellowship Fee:

AUD $1,344.00
