Basic Physician Training (Adult Internal Medicine)

Adult internal medicine physicians are medical doctors who have completed Advanced Training in a medical specialty with the RACP to diagnose and manage complex medical conditions in adults. Basic physician training (BPT) is the initial training program that needs to be completed as an entry pathway to Advanced Training programs.

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective trainees must have:

Current general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia or medical registration with general scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand
An appointment to an appropriate training position at an accredited training site
Discussed their application and received approval to apply for Basic Training from the hospital or network Director of Physician Education (DPE)

Application Process

Apply to an accredited clinical site for BPT position
Online registrations with approval of local DPE

Program Structure

Trainees undergo 36 months of certified training time, comprising:

24 months minimum of core training, including:
- 12 months minimum in medical specialties
- 3 months minimum in general and acute care medicine
12 months maximum of non-core training, which can be replaced by additional core training
at least 12 months at a Level 3 Teaching Hospital (Principal Training Program)
at least 3 months outside a Level 3 Teaching Hospital (Principal Training Program)
the completion of an Advanced Life Support course or equivalent

General Medicine

3 months minimum (6 months recommended)
Up to 6 months maximum can be spent at any one training site
Up to 12 months total as core training

Medical specialties

12 months minimum
6 months maximum spent in any one specialty
33 months total training time

Optional core training:

ED (3 months maximum)
Anaesthetics (3 month maximum)
General Paediatrics (6 months maximum)

During the early 3rd year of basic physician training, candidates may sit written and then clinical examinations.
An Advanced Life Support course or equivalent is required before the end of Basic Training.
